Tutorial : How to Draw a Rose

Hi everyone !
In this post, i will show you earn how to draw a rose with detailed 10 steps instruction, going from basic sketch of the flower outline to shading your final rose drawing in fully rendered colors.
This step by step tutorial only concentrate on drawing the rose itself, not the whole flower with stem, leaves and barbs. Now, let's enjoy the detailed explanation to help you create a well executed, beautiful and romantic drawing of a rose.

How to Draw a Rose Sketch

Step 1: Begin by establishing the flower outline frame for your rose drawing.
This is very easy to do, simply quickly draw a shape that looks like circle, but not too smoothly circular, as we want our rose flower to look natural and organic. So be brave to give it some definition my actually straightening a bit here and there.
Then move onto rosebud outline - a roughly drawn cylinder that has top surface look like simplified version of heart-shape.

Step 2: Start working on rosebud details.
As you see, I started to sketch from the very center and then worked it further. If you learn to draw a rose this way you won't have to erase any overlapping pencil sketches and thus keep your drawing of a rose super clean and tidy!
Note: I also faded the original sketch of rose outline in previous drawing step.

Step 3: Draw petals further of rose bud.
You might have noticed that this how to draw a rose step has become a bit more complex. The petals start to expand create various shapes of folds and openings.
My advice is to find yourself a good reference picture of a realistic rose to help better understand its anatomy and how rose petals looks like in nature.
Step 4: Add more petals to your rose sketch.
The trick here is to draw fewer and larger rose petals as you move further away from the flower center.
Keep an eye for any distinctive shape or swirls that you like and that add to the softness and delicate nature of rose flowers.
The key to drawing really beautiful roses lies in keen observation and ability to depict those findings in your artwork.

Step 5: Final 'how to draw rose sketch' step.
Sketch some extra petals on the outer edges of your rose drawing to fill in the structure outline we created in step 1.
This is how I was able to draw a rose that have an artistic touch yet look balanced and natural.

How to Draw a Rose in Color

Step 6: Fill in a light pink color
Depending on your chosen rose color, you might as well do it with any other hues as you like, for example: purple, blue, orange, yellow or light red.
For this red rose lesson you need to start with a light pink color just like in the illustration to the left.
Step 7: Shade your rose in color
In this learn to draw a rose step I picked a red color that has some pink in it and quickly went over the dark areas first.
If you're unsure - start with shadows and then work your way out.
Step 8: Add mid-tones to your rose flower
For this how to draw a rose example I used a little bit of red-orange along with light purple to smoothen the transition between light and shadow.
Don't worry about any textures at this stage, all you are doing here is establishing tones and values to create a 3 dimensional drawing of a rose.
Step 9:  Learn to draw a rose with texture
Your rose flower drawing is almost done. Now is the time to create interest in your art by sketching in some crease lines - contouring the curls of rose petals.
This is how you create an illusion that your red rose is actually a three dimensional form instead of appearing as a 2d flat drawing.
Use a darker color pencil or any other mediums of you choice, like: soft pastels or Conte crayons.
Step 10: Finish red rose drawing
We created some interesting patterns in previous step, but you rose flower still need some definition in the center area to create focus.
Perhaps, work on a bit more details and use sharp ink lines to create contrasting edges of rosebud's petals.
Don't be afraid to increase the color intensity by drawing over it with brighter colors.
To help you with drawing and sketching, its a great idea to use real life photographs. There are many kind of roses, each will have subtle difference in colors, shades, and petal forms. Paying attention to those little details will improve your drawing skills by many folds.

Ask an Expert

Hello again !
I will interview someone who I think has special skills in photography and I meet my friend who I think is an expert on photography. Want to introduce my friend, His name is Dicky Chandra aka alaubogor. His street images are a play of light and shadow and dash of colours with layers of information. I asked him some simple questions about his photography and he responded as under :

Tell me about yourself and your relationship with photography ?
I’m an amateur photographer in the sense that I don’t earn my living with photography, though I work as freelancer sometimes.

What does photography mean to you? What do you want to express from your images and how do you view your evolution as a photographer?
It’s basically the way I express myself, as well as a very fun past-time. It’s an excuse to go up early and go to places I’d never go. I think I’ll always keep evolving (I hope so), and I hope that I’ll always find motivation to keep on doing what I do.

How did you develop interest in street photography? What kind of human activities and street elements do you like shooting most?
In the beginning I wasn’t even aware of such a genre called street photography. When I joined a photography community, I learned a lot about the elements in a photo like color, light, shadow and space. Then I started shooting on the streets a lot, to get to know Pontianak neighborhoods better and to venture into the city. I did not look for any specific subject matters, I was simply attracted by the effect of low sun light over urban surfaces.

tell me about the equipment (camera, lenses, software, etc.) you mostly use and why. Your photos are vividly colored with striking shadows. Do you believe you’ve found your style?
i’ve used Canon cameras for a long time. I use my Canon lenses on it too, mostly a Canon 35mm or 50mm. I’m not sure it’s my style, but maybe a style which is a mix of my influences. I guess I share this style with many others.

What are your future plans/projects, ambitions, aspirations etc.?
I’ll be quite happy if I keep finding motivation to keep shooting everyday life for a long time. And I hope someday in the future I can make a proper book of my best work. Who knows… haha

Something to say to our readers or aspiring photographers (or random words of wisdom):
Try photographing to please yourself. If you’re really taking pleasure from it, it’ll show.

I can't imagine life without a home

Hi!
Today, I will writing about “I can't imagine without a home”. Why? Because it's a very important things for me!
A house is not a home because it’s is just a structure you live under but a home can be anywhere.
Or can be defined of these two words are similar, as shown below.
house:  a building in which a person or a family lives
home:  a house or apartment where a person or a family lives

The main difference between them is that house is concrete. House refers to a building in which someone lives. In contrast, a home can refer either to a building or to any location that a person thinks of as the place where she lives and that belongs to her. A home can even be something abstract, a place in your mind. When you say, “Let’s go home,” you are probably not talking simply about going to the physical structure where you live. You are talking about being in the special place where you feel most comfortable and that belongs to you.

Home is important to me because it is always their for you when you’re happy, sad, angry, excited, etc. your best moments are at home. You share secrets of love are hatred and so does your home. Home is where you eat, sleep, work and play. You’re loved it.

Home is not just not a structure it’s where you get loved. When you walk the streets and you see people without homes and nobody by their side helping them it just simply makes you sad and I think why does this have to happen to people’s do check if pocket change. Imagine you had no home and nobody to love you wouldn’t you feel sad. If I had a chance to give back to the community I will take it. When my parents and I are taking apart something that still can be used and do want it we donated to they donate it to habitat for humanity so we can help build a home in our community.

Talking About My Skill

Hello !
Welcome Back ! I want to tell you about about the skills that I have. Yes, it is a drawing. I was interested in drawing since I was a kid until now.
I want to tell you about what I learned about drawing. Drawing is an activity to show the imagination of ourselves or imitate something, using many choices of techniques and tools. And I will explain the drawing techniques that I can. The first is the technique of pointillism, technique of pointillism is a technique using dots to create images. I like this technique because it takes a lot of patience, but the results can be very impressive! The following is an example of a drawing of the technique of pointillism :

Secondly, this technique is still being studied because it requires an understanding of the composition of the image. This technique is a hatching technique or usually called a cross-hatching technique. This technique is used to effect color or shadow by drawing parallel lines. This technique also varies the distance, angle, length, and line types so as to produce a certain shadow gradient.
The following is an example of a drawing of the Hatching technique :

Ok, that's the skill I have and a few drawing techniques that I can share. Thank you for reading and see ya!
